PEYRE (Marie-Joseph, known as Peyre the Elder) (1730–1788). - Lot 271
PEYRE (Marie-Joseph, known as Peyre the Elder) (1730–1788). French architect and painter. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1751. A leading figure in French Neoclassical architecture, he notably designed, along with Charles de Wailly, the Théâtre de l’Odéon in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Peyre” to a count. No place, July 17, 1779. 1 folio page. An interesting letter concerning the maintenance of the royal facilities at Choisy and the preparations for Louis XVI’s hunting expeditions. Peyre informs his correspondent of urgent work to be carried out on a royal vessel: “The King’s third rowboat at Choisy is taking on water and needs to be caulked; would you be so kind as to give your orders for two of the caulkers from Versailles to come and perform this task. ” He also draws his attention to the alarming condition of the access roads to the estate, as the royal hunting season approaches: “The King’s hunting season is approaching, and the road from Choisy to Villeneuve-Saint-Georges is impassable. ” The architect requests that measures be taken to remedy this situation, recalling the steps already taken. An interesting account of the administration and maintenance of royal residences under Louis XVI, a few years before the French Revolution. Document bearing handwritten annotations at the top, notably regarding the dispatch of caulkers to Choisy. Traces of creases, slight foxing, and remnants of a red wax seal. In good overall condition.
