NIEUWERKERKE (Alfred Émilien O'Hara, Count of) (1811–1892). - Lot 267
NIEUWERKERKE (Alfred Émilien O'Hara, Count of) (1811–1892). French sculptor and high-ranking civil servant. As Director of the Imperial Museums and a close associate of Napoleon III, he played a key role in the artistic policy of the Second Empire. Autograph letter signed “Count of Nieuwerkerke” to a lady. July 25, 1862. 3 pages, in-8. Layered paper bearing two collector’s stamps. A lovely personal letter in which Nieuwerkerke expresses his regret at being unable to accept an invitation, as he is tied up by his duties and the need to work. In particular, he mentions his daily activities and his inability to leave the countryside. “I live in the countryside [...] I promised to write to you [...]” He apologizes to his correspondent, assuring her of his affection and his hope to see her again soon. This letter offers a more intimate glimpse into the personality of the director of the Imperial Museums, whose correspondence is particularly sought after for its insights into the art history of the Second Empire.
