NANTEUIL (Charles François Nanteuil-Lebœuf, known as) (1792– - Lot 266
NANTEUIL (Charles François Nanteuil-Lebœuf, known as) (1792–1865). French sculptor, a student of Pierre Cartellier, and winner of the first Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture in 1817. A member of the Academy of Fine Arts, he is best known for his monumental sculptures and portraits. Autograph letter signed “Nanteuil” to his fellow sculptor Augustin-Alexandre Dumont (1801–1884). [Paris], October 19, 1846. 1 page, in-8 format, with an address on the reverse and postmarks. An interesting letter regarding the organization of a committee meeting at the Academy of Fine Arts, concerning in particular the statue by the sculptor Charles-Antoine Debay. “I saw Mr. Debay this morning; it was he who requested the convening of a committee meeting at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He would prefer that our meeting at his home take place sooner rather than next Saturday, as his statue has long been on display in his garden, exposed to the elements.” Nanteuil suggests to Dumont that they meet the following Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. to examine the work and asks for his reply so they can arrange the meeting. This correspondence reflects the professional relationships between sculptors and the workings of the Academy of Fine Arts’ art committees in the mid-19th century. It also highlights the challenges of preserving sculptures displayed outdoors. An interesting letter for the history of French sculpture during the July Monarchy, featuring the names of three sculptors of the era: Nanteuil, Dumont, and Debay. Handwritten address on the reverse, Rue Saint-Guillaume in Paris. Postmarks. Old creases, some foxing and small stains, signs of opening and wear.
