LUMINAIS (Évariste-Vital) (1821–1896). - Lot 264
LUMINAIS (Évariste-Vital) (1821–1896). French painter, famous for his historical compositions depicting Gaul and the Merovingian era. A leading figure in 19th-century history painting, he was a student of Constant Troyon and exhibited regularly at the Salon. Autograph letter signed “Ev. Luminais” to Mr. Léché. Paris, May 24, 1887. 1 page, in-8 format, in black ink on white paper. In this letter, Évariste Luminais declines an invitation to dinner, citing his health problems and his work-related commitments involving artistic awards. The artist expresses his regret at being unable to accept yet another invitation to Carazza’s: “I really have no luck! Once again, I find myself unable to attend the dinner at Carazza’s, both because of my health, which requires me to take it easy, and because of my work on the awards, for which I want to reserve all my strength. ” He concludes by asking his correspondent to accept his best regards. This letter attests to Évariste Luminais’s professional obligations within the Parisian art world of the late 19th century. The reference to “work related to awards” is particularly interesting: it could refer to his participation in the deliberations of an art jury or to work related to the awarding of honors, though the document does not allow us to identify the specific event in question. A renowned painter during his lifetime, Évariste Luminais was particularly famous for his depictions of the Gauls, the Merovingians, and episodes from national history. Among his works are *Les Énervés de Jumièges* and *La Veuve*. Condition: Generally good condition. Some old creases and slight signs of handling. Handwriting is clearly legible; the signature is accompanied by a particularly elaborate initials.
