LOEWER (Alfred). Swiss lawyer, father of the painter and tap - Lot 263
LOEWER (Alfred). Swiss lawyer, father of the painter and tapestry designer Claude Loewer (1917–2006). Autograph letter signed “Loewer” to André Dunoyer de Segonzac (1884–1974). La Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), December 31, 1936. Two and a half pages, in-8 format, on an elegant greeting card featuring an embossed lace design, adorned with multicolored flowers and silver motifs. A charming thank-you letter addressed to the painter André Dunoyer de Segonzac for his support of the young Claude Loewer, then nineteen years old and at the beginning of his artistic career. On the occasion of the New Year, Alfred Loewer extends his warmest wishes to the French painter: “Our warmest wishes for the New Year. We wish you strength and good health to create beautiful and great works of art.” He then expressed his gratitude for the help given to his son Claude, a young Swiss artist who had come to Paris to study: “Please allow us to express our gratitude for the support you have so generously given to Claude.” The young painter’s father expressed his confidence in his son’s artistic future: “He has proven himself worthy through his diligence and hard work, and will undoubtedly fulfill all the promises of a career filled with enthusiasm and admiration for you. ” The letter concludes with a solemn wish, given the European tensions of the time: “We earnestly hope that Providence will protect your beloved country and its artists. ” This correspondence is of documentary interest regarding Claude Loewer’s early career and his relationship with André Dunoyer de Segonzac. Claude Loewer, born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1917, moved to Paris in 1936 to further his artistic training. He attended the Ranson and Colarossi academies, among others, before enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1937. He later became a leading figure in modern tapestry and Swiss geometric abstraction. hls-dhs-dss.ch +1 This letter thus attests to the support provided by an already established French painter to a young Swiss artist still at the beginning of his career. Condition: Good overall condition. A few slight creases and signs of handling. Well-preserved polychrome embossed decoration. Blue ink handwriting is perfectly legible.
