LOCKSPEISER (Edward). 1905–1973. British musicologist, music - Lot 262
LOCKSPEISER (Edward). 1905–1973. British musicologist, music critic, and writer, specializing in French music, particularly the works of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED “Edw. Lockspeiser,” regarding a musical manuscript intended for his research. London, August 13, 1957. 2 pages, in-8 format, on letterhead printed with his name and address, 32 Rodney Court, London W.9. An interesting letter reflecting Edward Lockspeiser’s musicological research on French musical manuscripts. The musicologist warmly thanks his correspondent for sending a manuscript tentatively titled *M'am au bois*, which he wishes to have enlarged and study as part of his research. “I am delighted to have received the manuscript [...] for which I thank you very much, and I will keep you informed of how I use it in my research as soon as I have had it enlarged and have studied it. ” He specifies that he will pay the corresponding fees directly to a photographer in Lausanne, Switzerland. This letter illustrates the musicologist’s working methods, based on the direct study and photographic reproduction of manuscript sources, as well as his correspondence with the custodians of musical documents. Edward Lockspeiser is particularly known for his important works on Claude Debussy, including his two-volume biography *Debussy: His Life and Mind*, which has become a standard reference work. A fine copy, with very legible handwriting, showing slight signs of handling.
