LAPAIX (Constant). (1835–1886) Born in Nancy. French painter, engraver, and heraldist, author of works devoted to the coats of arms of the towns of Lorraine AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED “C. Lapaix” regarding his Armorial of the Towns of Lorraine, accompanied by an engraved portrait of the artist. Nancy, November 27, 1873. A 2-page letter in-8, on black-bordered mourning paper, adorned with his engraved monogram. An interesting letter concerning the preparation of the second edition of his *Armorial of the Cities of Lorraine*. Constant Lapaix informs his correspondent that he has been added to the list of subscribers for the work and notes that the coat of arms of Bourmont already appears on page 73 of the first edition. “The coat of arms of Bourmont is depicted on page 73 of the first edition of the Armorial and will also appear in the second edition, accompanied by a slightly more extensive historical entry. ” He then requests additional information about this locality so that he can incorporate it into the manuscript before it goes to press: “If you have any further details, I can only ask you to send them to me as soon as possible, so that I may have time to examine them and, if appropriate, insert them into the manuscript, which is to be submitted for proofreading shortly. ” An account of Constant Lapaix’s historical and heraldic research, illustrating his working method and his commitment to supplementing the entries in his Armorial with information provided by his correspondents.
