LABROUCHE (Pierre). French painter and printmaker (Bayonne, - Lot 239
LABROUCHE (Pierre). French painter and printmaker (Bayonne, 1876–1956), particularly known for his landscapes, architectural views, and depictions of the Basque Country and Spain. Autograph letter signed “Pierre Labrouche” to Mr. Barbet, a collector. Ciboure (Basses-Pyrénées), May 4, 1933. 2 pages, in-4 format, in black ink on blue paper, with a handwritten address at the top. Creases. An interesting letter regarding the organization of an exhibition of his works in Paris at the Ecalle Gallery, and mentioning the painter Henri Martin. Pierre Labrouche informs his correspondent of an upcoming exhibition of paintings and sepia drawings at the Ecalle Gallery on the Faubourg Saint-Honoré, scheduled for June. He hopes to present the works still in his possession, as well as several paintings previously sold to collectors. He recalls that Henri Martin was among the visitors to his previous exhibition and hopes this time to bring together three or four high-quality paintings to leave the public with a lasting impression of his work: “I would like to include in this exhibition at Ecalle three or four paintings from among those I have sold and which I consider to be of good quality, so that the public viewing this collection may retain a memory of it. ” In particular, he requests the loan of a work belonging to his correspondent—*Le Petit Patio de Tolède*—for about fifteen days during the first half of June. The artist specifies the arrangements for transporting the painting, which is to be picked up by his art dealer, Blanchet, located at 38 rue Bonaparte, and returned after the exhibition. This letter provides an interesting insight into the preparation of Pierre Labrouche’s solo exhibitions, his relationships with his collectors, and the circulation of his paintings in Parisian galleries during the interwar period. A fine piece of artistic correspondence, mentioning Henri Martin and a specifically identified work by Labrouche. Condition: old creases, slight wrinkles, and minor signs of wear; no apparent damage.
