LABORDE (Rosine), known as Mlle Villaume (1824–1907). - Lot 237
LABORDE (Rosine), known as Mlle Villaume (1824–1907). French opera singer and voice teacher. She entered the Paris Conservatory in 1833, then joined the Opéra-Comique in 1840. Known by the name Villaume, she toured internationally and notably made a name for herself at the Théâtre Italien. Autograph letter signed “Rosine Laborde” to Mr. Dalloz. No place, no date [19th century]. 3 pages, in-12 format, in violet ink. An interesting letter in which the singer expresses her sympathy to her correspondent, who has been struck by a painful event, and offers her condolences. “How deeply I sympathize with all the painful and distressing events that have befallen you! Once again, a very serious accident that occurred in your home must have caused you great distress…” She goes on to mention the misfortunes that seem to be piling up for her recipient: “I send you my warmest regards; I would have liked to see you—not just as friends—but I wasn’t lucky enough to find them at home.” The letter concludes with a warm and affectionate closing, reflecting the closeness between the two correspondents. Rosine Laborde was notably a student of Désiré Dalloz (1795–1869), a French jurist and politician who founded the famous legal publishing house that bears his name. She was also known for her work as a singing teacher and her connections to Parisian artistic circles. A beautiful letter of sympathy, written in a personal tone, illustrating the private life of a 19th-century opera singer. Traces of old folds, slight foxing, and signs of handling. In good overall condition.
