LABLACHE (Luigi) (1794–1858). Famous Franco-Italian opera ba - Lot 233
LABLACHE (Luigi) (1794–1858). Famous Franco-Italian opera bass. Signed autograph letter to a correspondent regarding a contract and his inability to travel to Versailles. No place, June 14 [no year]. Autograph letter signed “Marie Lablache,” 2 pages, in-8 format, in brown ink, on paper adorned with an elegant monogram printed in blue, repeated in relief on the second page. An interesting letter in which the writer, presumably Marie Lablache, candidly explains why she is unable to accept an invitation and apologizes to the recipient. She writes, in part: “My husband saw the autograph you sent me; he asks me to tell you that it is indeed his father’s handwriting—written quickly and in a more careless style than usual—but that there is no doubt about it. ” She goes on to share some personal memories: “I hope your dear children are well; please give my regards to Madame de Borges, and please accept, dear Sir, my warmest regards.” The letter is of particular interest due to its reference to the authentication of an autograph attributed to Luigi Lablache, a famous 19th-century bass. The writer states that her husband positively recognized his father’s handwriting, despite it being written more quickly and in a more careless manner than usual. Luigi Lablache (1794–1858), born in Naples, was one of the greatest basses of his time. Endowed with an exceptionally powerful voice and remarkable stage presence, he triumphed on the major European stages, notably in Paris and London. In 1827, he participated in Mozart’s Requiem performed at Beethoven’s funeral. The document is in generally good condition, with a few creases and slight foxing. The handwriting is beautiful, even, and perfectly legible. The decorative monogram is particularly elegant.
