LA TOUCHE (Gaston de) (1854–1913). - Lot 230
LA TOUCHE (Gaston de) (1854–1913). French painter, engraver, illustrator, and sculptor. A leading figure in Belle Époque painting, famous for his elegant compositions, festive scenes, and luminous depictions of high society life.A beautiful autograph letter signed “G. La Touche” to the writer and journalist Auguste Dupouy (1872–1967). Saint-Cloud, February 26, 1900. 4 pages, in-8 format, in black ink, on paper bearing his printed address: “31, rue Dailly, Saint-Cloud.” A remarkable letter of advice addressed to a young writer, in which Gaston La Touche offers personal reflections on youth, human relationships, shyness, pride, and regrets. The painter responds to his correspondent, who appears to have confided a personal difficulty to him. He encourages him to overcome his hesitations and uses a metaphor drawn from nature: “You have yielded to a feeling I know all too well to fail to excuse, but believe me, you are young—at an age when it is still easy to prune away from the vigorous trunk those wayward branches that grow poorly and cast shade where light is needed. ” He continues with a particularly forceful exhortation: “This feeling you allude to is a bad branch—cut it off! Cut it off!” The artist then opens up about his own experiences and the consequences of his reserve: “I lost almost all my childhood friends because of the fear you’ve described. I suffered because of it.” He reflects on the mechanisms behind this attitude, wavering between shyness, humility, and pride: “I’ve never quite figured out whether I was acting out of shyness, humility, or pride—or perhaps, more often than not, out of an excess of discretion.” The letter then takes a more personal turn. Gaston La Touche mentions an article recently published by his correspondent, which he particularly enjoyed: “Without your excellent father, I would have missed the opportunity to congratulate you on a very well-written article.” He explains that he hesitated to attribute it to you, so much did he recognize a familiar writing style. He concludes by offering Auguste Dupouy words of encouragement and the assurance of his sympathy, hoping to see him again soon. LA TOUCHE (Gaston de) (1854–1913). This letter is of particular interest for understanding Gaston La Touche’s personality. Far from mere social niceties, the painter reveals himself to be attentive to the difficulties faced by a young writer, while candidly expressing his own regrets and sensitivity. The metaphor of the tree and the branches to be pruned lends the text a distinct literary quality. It illustrates how the painter translates his observation of nature into a moral reflection. The letter also bears witness to the relationship between Gaston La Touche and Auguste Dupouy, who was twenty-seven years old at the time and at the beginning of his literary career. Condition: Good overall condition. Age-related creases, some slight signs of handling. Handwriting is clearly legible on paper with a printed address. LA TOUCHE (Gaston de) (1854–1913).
