ISABEY (Jean-Baptiste), known as Isabey the Elder. (Nancy, 1 - Lot 227
ISABEY (Jean-Baptiste), known as Isabey the Elder. (Nancy, 1767 – Paris, 1855). French painter, miniaturist, draftsman, lithographer, and decorator. Renowned portraitist of the Imperial Court, then of the Restoration and the July Monarchy. Father of the painter Eugène Isabey. Autograph letter signed “Isabey père” to a lady. No place, January 1, 1851. 1 page, in-12 format, on vellum paper. A gracious thank-you letter from the famous miniaturist of Napoleon I, then 83 years old. “Madam, I am pleased to be able to respond to your gracious invitation. I express my deepest gratitude to you. I remain, with respect, Madam, your most humble and obedient servant. Isabey père. January 1, 1851.” Jean-Baptiste Isabey was one of the most sought-after portraitists of his time. A protégé of Marie Antoinette, he lived through the political upheavals of the Revolution, the Empire, and the Restoration, working notably for Napoleon I and Joséphine de Beauharnais. He was also responsible for organizing official ceremonies and produced numerous portraits of prominent European figures. A beautiful signature, “Isabey père,” characteristic of the later period of his life, which distinguishes him from his son Eugène Isabey (1803–1886), also a painter. The letter shows some creases and slight signs of handling. Appears to be in good overall condition.
