HOLMÈS (Augusta) (1847–1903) - Lot 218
HOLMÈS (Augusta) (1847–1903) French poet and composer of Irish origin who became a naturalized French citizen, best known for her symphonic works, her art songs, and her opera *La Montagne noire*. Long autograph letter signed “Augusta Holmès,” addressed to a friend. No place, September 30, 1888. 4 pp. in-8, in black ink, on a double sheet. A very interesting letter in which Augusta Holmès discusses her musical activities, her financial difficulties, her compositional projects, and her personal concerns. The composer explains that she is swamped with commissioned work and regrets not being able to devote more time to her artistic pursuits: “You must be busy right now carrying the mask—pardon me, the spool—in the service of public transport; just like your ‘decadent’ August. ” She then discusses her work on choral pieces and a large-scale fantasia intended for performance by a vocal and orchestral ensemble, specifically mentioning Augustin Thierry and several musicians in her circle. Particularly revealing are her reflections on the financial difficulties she faces. She confides that she works tirelessly, despite her financial concerns, in order to continue her work as a composer: “I am very sorry to see you without work at the moment. If you put off using your imagination for too long, it hardens and becomes as firm as a rock.” She also discusses her relationships with artistic and literary circles, her travel plans, and the obstacles she encountered in promoting her compositions. A valuable account of the daily life, artistic ambitions, and professional challenges of Augusta Holmès, a leading figure in women’s musical composition in the late 19th century. Some old creases, slight foxing, and a few signs of handling.
