HOLMÈS (Augusta) (1847–1903) - Lot 217
HOLMÈS (Augusta) (1847–1903) French poet and composer of Irish and British descent, naturalized as a French citizen, best known for her symphonic works, her art songs, and her opera *La Montagne noire*. Autograph letter signed “Augusta Holmès,” addressed to a correspondent. No place, November 26, 1892. 1 p. in-12, in black ink, on a double sheet. An interesting letter concerning the performance of one of her works and her relationship with her publisher. The composer thanks her correspondent for having fond memories of a previous performance and is delighted by the news he shares with her: “I am delighted that you have fond memories of our ‘performance’ on Sunday evening, and that you have already received good news from Vienna. ” She then expresses her intention to ask her publisher for a score and a poem: “I hastened to ask my publisher for the score and the poem, and Mr. Lekstein will have them in a few days. ” This is an interesting account of the dissemination of Augusta Holmès’s works abroad and of the composer’s relationships with Viennese musical circles in the late 19th century. Some old creases; slight signs of handling.
