HÉDOUIN (Pierre) (1789–1868). Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Lawy - Lot 214
HÉDOUIN (Pierre) (1789–1868). Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Lawyer, man of letters, historian, and musician. Letter from “P. Hédouin” to “Sir and dear compatriot” [Jules Lesamble]. No place, no date [circa 1848–1849]. 3 pages, in-4. AN INTERESTING LETTER ON PUBLISHING AND FRANCO-BELGIAN LITERARY RELATIONS. Pierre Hédouin discusses the difficulties he faces in obtaining an administrative decision regarding a publication project following the 1848 revolution. He laments the slowness of the ministerial bureaucracy and the uncertainties surrounding his efforts. He recounts having sought the intervention of a high-ranking official to obtain the necessary authorizations and expresses concern about the scant regard accorded to authors and publishers. He also sends his correspondent lengthy observations on the distribution of books and the role of foreign publications—particularly Belgian and English ones—in French intellectual life. “I am sending you, my dear compatriot, a biography of Gossec (...) for which I have gathered anecdotal information that has never before been published. ” He discusses the great composers of the past, notably Gluck, Mozart, Grétry, Méhul, and Spontini, as well as the significance of their legacy. A BEAUTIFUL ACCOUNT OF THE CIRCULATION OF IDEAS, MUSIC PUBLISHING, AND INTELLECTUAL EXCHANGES BETWEEN FRANCE AND BELGIUM IN THE MID-19TH CENTURY. A few old creases and slight foxing.
