GOUNOD (Victoire, née Lemachois) (1780–1858). Mother of comp - Lot 206
GOUNOD (Victoire, née Lemachois) (1780–1858). Mother of composer Charles Gounod. Letter from “Mrs. Gounod” to Jules Richomme. [Paris], August 1, 1844. 1½ pages, in-12 format. Address and postmarks on the reverse. Folds; some foxing. A touching family letter in which Charles Gounod’s mother gives news of her son, who is suffering from a sore throat, and attests to the deep affection binding the Gounod and Richomme families. “ Early this morning, while at Jules’s house, Charles was struck by constipation and a sore throat, which I hope will have passed by tonight, for the membrane is already causing him less pain today; however, his headache is still very severe, his throat is also painful, and he cannot sing, as you can imagine. He is very sorry he cannot go see your dear father today, since he would have had the pleasure of providing him with a diversion he enjoys; I, too, would like to keep him company for a few hours, but I am unable to do so. ” She continues affectionately: “You know how long my deep affection for them has been: my daughter shares it; I love you too, dear Jules—I embrace you as a mother would; Urbain and Charles are your brothers at heart. ” Victoire Gounod, mother of the famous composer, was a cultured woman who played an important role in her children’s musical education. This letter, written when Charles Gounod was only twenty-six years old, offers an intimate glimpse into his youth and his ties to the Richomme family.
