GOUNOD (Charles). Paris, 1818–1893. French composer. Winner - Lot 204
GOUNOD (Charles). Paris, 1818–1893. French composer. Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1839. Autograph letter signed “Ch. Gounod” to “Jules Richomme” [the painter Jules Richomme]. [Paris], August 1, 1844. 1½ pages, in-12 format. Postmark and address label. Slight creases. A VERY BEAUTIFUL LETTER FROM CHARLES GOUNOD’S YOUTH, TESTIFYING TO HIS DEEP AFFECTION FOR THE RICHOMME FAMILY. The young composer expresses concern for the health of his friend Jules and his family, particularly his sister and father, whose suffering he laments. “Charles, who was in good health, dear Jules, has come down with whooping cough and a sore throat, which I hope will not last long, for his chest is already feeling better today, but his headache is still very severe, his throat is also painful, and he cannot sing as you might expect. ” Gounod regrets not being able to visit the family: “He very much regrets not being able to go see your dear father today, since he would have had the pleasure of providing him with some entertainment he enjoys. ” He concludes with an affectionate declaration of friendship: “You know how long my deep attachment to them has been: my dear, share this with them; I love you too, dear Jules; I embrace you as my own; Urbain and Charles are your brothers at heart. ” This precious correspondence from his youth, written a few years after Gounod’s stay in Italy as a resident of the Villa Medici, reveals the close and enduring bonds that united the musician with the Richomme family.
