GOUNOD (Charles). Paris, 1818–1893. French composer. Winner - Lot 202
GOUNOD (Charles). Paris, 1818–1893. French composer. Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1839. Autograph letter signed “Ch. Gounod” to “My dear little Jules” [the painter Jules Richomme]. [Paris], October 19, 1857. 1½ pages, in-8 format. Address and postmarks. A BEAUTIFUL, INTIMATE LETTER FROM CHARLES GOUNOD TO HIS FRIEND JULES RICHOMME, DISCUSSING HIS HEALTH AND HIS GRADUAL RETURN TO WORK. “It is without surprise—and not without deep appreciation—that I have noted your eagerness to inquire after my well-being during the difficult days I have just endured, as reported by those around me.” The composer, clearly weakened, candidly describes his state of convalescence: “My head still feels quite foggy and my legs are very wobbly: I am inevitably confined to a very unproductive and idle life for the moment.” He expresses, however, the hope of quickly resuming his activities and work habits, thanks to a more regular routine and rest. This is a touching account of Gounod’s private life and health, revealing the deep affection he felt for his childhood friend, the painter Jules Richomme (1818–1903).
