GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer. Winner of the - Lot 200
GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer. Winner of the Prix de Rome in 1839. Autograph manuscript signed “Ch. Gounod,” titled “Le Théâtre d’application.” No place or date. 1/2 page in-4, in pencil. An interesting reflection on the training of young artists and the continuation of their education after their stay at the Villa Medici. Gounod presents the Théâtre d’application as a natural extension of the Rome Scholarship, allowing artists to put their training into practice and benefit from state support. “An excellent extension of the Rome Scholarship, and a logical fulfillment of the obligations the state has undertaken toward the scholar in terms of support. ” He concludes: “In a word, the practical annual culmination of the Rome Fellowship.” This document attests to Charles Gounod’s interest in the training and professional future of young artists, having himself won the Grand Prix de Rome for musical composition in 1839. Autograph signature “Ch. Gounod” at the end of the text. A few foxing spots and slight signs of handling.
