GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer. Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1839. Letter signed “Ch. Gounod” to his friend, the painter Jules Richomme. No place, Friday, March 5, 1869. 1 page, in-12 format. Enclosed stamped envelope. A friendly letter from Charles Gounod arranging a meeting with Jules Richomme and mentioning Ernest Legouvé and Jules Pasdeloup. “I find in my notes for tomorrow, upon returning home, an appointment with Legouvé and Pasdeloup for 1 p.m. So don’t count on me, and if you’d like, we can reschedule my visit for Monday morning around 9 a.m. or 9:15 a.m. at your studio.” Ernest Legouvé (1807–1903), playwright and member of the Académie Française, and Jules Pasdeloup (1819–1887), conductor and founder of the Concerts populaires, belonged to the artistic circle frequented by Gounod. This short letter illustrates the composer’s close relationship with Jules Richomme as well as his involvement in the Parisian music scene.
