GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer. Winner of the First Grand Prix de Rome in 1839. Autograph letter signed “Ch. Gounod” to his friend, the painter Jules Richomme. Sunday, February 13, 1870. 1 page, in-12 format. Stamped envelope enclosed. A friendly letter in which Charles Gounod invites Jules Richomme to lunch to discuss a matter he considers important and urgent. “ My dear Jules, You absolutely must come to lunch at my house on Tuesday. I need to speak with you about something that I hope will be both useful and pleasant for you. Please don’t miss it: this matter requires an urgent response.” Gounod concludes his letter by extending his regards to the Richomme family. This note attests to the close relationship between the composer and the painter Jules Richomme, with whom Gounod maintained a regular correspondence. The urgent nature of this invitation suggests a matter that might be of personal or professional interest to his correspondent, though the precise subject cannot be determined.
