GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer, best known fo - Lot 195
GOUNOD (Charles) (1818–1893). French composer, best known for his operas *Faust* and *Romeo and Juliet* and for his extensive body of religious music. Autograph manuscript containing philosophical and religious reflections on Catholicism, confession, communion, and human nature. Undated [19th century]. Two double-sided handwritten folios, oblong in format, in brown ink, containing numerous corrections, deletions, additions, and crossed-out passages. An interesting working manuscript reflecting the composer’s religious and philosophical concerns. Gounod offers an in-depth reflection on the foundations of Catholicism, the relationship between the Church and society, and the spiritual value of religious practices. He focuses particularly on confession and communion, their significance, and their place in the life of the believer. He also discusses baptism, Christian doctrine, human nature, and the relationship between ecclesiastical precepts and individual freedom. “Are confession and communion, however, not susceptible to abuse?” The manuscript also addresses the relationship between Christianity and Roman society, as well as questions of morality and individual responsibility. These pages, extensively revised and corrected, are of great interest for the study of Charles Gounod’s religious thought, in which his Catholic faith played an essential role in his life and work. The numerous cross-outs and additions attest to a genuine process of intellectual composition, likely intended for an essay or a work of religious reflection. Included is an old folder labeled “Autographs and Manuscripts” as well as a typewritten transcription of philosophical reflections on intelligence, imagination, thought, and existence. Unsigned and undated manuscript. Attribution to Gounod to be confirmed by handwriting comparison. A few creases, foxing, and minor irregularities in the margins.
