GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895). French composer, violinist, a - Lot 186
GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895). French composer, violinist, and conductor, particularly famous for his operas *Jocelyn* and *La Vivandière*. Autograph letter signed “Benjamin Godard” to Louis Gallet. No place, April 2, 1886. 4 folio pages. Important correspondence regarding the composition and performance of his operas, notably *Jocelyn* and *La Vivandière*, as well as the difficulties he encountered with publishers and theater directors. Benjamin Godard discusses his plan to hold a grand concert with an orchestra at the Cirque d’Hiver to showcase several of his compositions, notably his *Symphonie légendaire*, as well as excerpts from *Les Guelfes*. He informs his correspondent of his efforts with his publisher Grus and his intention to have some of his works performed: “To ask him to contribute (...) to Fauré’s fee, which is 2,500 francs. ” The composer then expresses his astonishment at the difficulties hindering his plans: “You’ll see that he hasn’t become any more practical than in the past! What a misfortune (...) that our work is in his hands! ” He also discusses the future of his opera *Les Guelfes* and the possibilities of staging it in several European cities: “If *Les Guelfes* were performed successfully at the Vienna Opera (...) it would certainly go on to Cologne, Weimar, Karlsruhe, Dresden (...) and then Italy, Spain, London, etc.” This lengthy letter provides valuable insight into Benjamin Godard’s musical ambitions, the international circulation of French operas, and the sometimes strained relationships between composers, publishers, and theater directors in the late 19th century. It also sheds light on Godard’s efforts to ensure the dissemination of his compositions outside of Parisian stages. A few old creases and slight signs of wear.
