GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895). French composer and conductor - Lot 184
GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895). French composer and conductor, best known for his operas *Jocelyn* and *La Vivandière*. Autograph letter signed “Benjamin Godard” to a colleague and friend. No place, May 2, 1892. 1 page 3/4 in-4. An interesting letter announcing the organization of a festival dedicated to French musicians, and demonstrating the composer’s solidarity with his colleagues. Godard informs his correspondent of an upcoming festival organized by the Union of Orchestral Musicians at the Trocadéro: “The Union of Orchestral Musicians will soon be holding a festival at the Trocadéro.” He invites his correspondent to perform one of his compositions there and highlights the caliber of the musicians already involved in the event: “We already have Guiraud, Dubois, Widor, and yours truly. ” The composer warmly encourages his friend to join this collective endeavor: “Everyone would be very happy about that!” He adds that he will forward the necessary information and mentions the organizing committee, notably a certain Mr. Picard, who represents the society’s committee. This document is of interest for the history of Parisian musical life in the late 19th century, directly mentioning several major figures in French music: Ernest Guiraud, Théodore Dubois, and Charles-Marie Widor. The letter attests to the activities of musicians’ societies, the organization of major Parisian festivals, and the professional relationships maintained among composers. A few signs of age.
