GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895), French composer, violinist, a - Lot 182
GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895), French composer, violinist, and conductor, best known for the operas *Jocelyn* and *La Vivandière*, as well as numerous chamber music compositions. Autograph letter signed “Benjamin Godard” to a young student. Paris, June 3, 1894. 1 folio page, on laid paper, with his address handwritten as 6 Boulevard de Clichy. Letter concerning his teaching activities and the preparation for a music exam. The composer responds to a student requesting a meeting regarding her studies: “Please let me know your response; (regarding the piece I sent you 10 to 12 days ago) I need it by tomorrow morning, Tuesday, because I have to send the proofs to Berlin before 5 p.m.” In this way, he attests to his musical and pedagogical activity, while also referring to the shipment of proofs to Berlin—a detail that reveals his connections to the world of international music publishing. This letter, written less than a year before his death, attests to Benjamin Godard’s continued, sustained activity toward the end of his career. Some old creases and slight signs of wear.
