GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895), French composer and conductor - Lot 177
GODARD (Benjamin) (1849–1895), French composer and conductor, best known for the operas *Jocelyn* and *La Vivandière*. Autograph letter signed “Benjamin Godard” to a poet [Camille Mendès, according to the old catalog entry]. No place, October 27, 1887. 1 page, in-8. An interesting letter concerning the preparation of a musical work and its performers. “My dear Gregh, the proofs for *La Mazart* (orchestra) have been ready for quite some time. Have them picked up at my home, 6 Boulevard de Clichy. ” The composer informs his correspondent of the progress made in preparing a work for orchestra and invites him to come pick up the musical proofs. This letter attests to Benjamin Godard’s activity in Parisian musical and publishing circles at the end of the 19th century, a time when he was producing numerous symphonic and operatic compositions. The paper shows some old creases.
