FINI (Eleonor, known as Leonor) (1908–1996). - Lot 157
FINI (Eleonor, known as Leonor) (1908–1996). A French surrealist painter, lithographer, theater set designer, and writer of Italian origin. A major figure in surrealism, Leonor Fini developed a unique universe blending dreamlike imagery, eroticism, metamorphoses, and enigmatic female figures. Her work explores, in particular, the relationships between desire, femininity, and the unconscious. Autograph letter signed “Leonor,” addressed to “Dear Pierre” [Pierre Besse]. Nonza (Corsica), July 17, 1960. 3 folio-sized pages, in red ink, on white paper. Autograph stamped envelope, with a postmark from Nonza dated July 18, 1960. A curious letter with a particularly lively tone in which Leonor Fini asks her correspondent to intervene urgently to retrieve and have precious Sicilian vases shipped to Corsica; the vases had been held up due to customs complications. From her home in Nonza, the artist expresses her exasperation at the difficulties she has encountered with a Marseille-based shipping company: “Can you imagine that those bastards at Lenars, 22 rue du Paradis, Provence 3034, still haven’t picked up the famous Sicilian vases as I ordered [...]? ” She explains that her correspondent, Flaccovio, who had gone to great lengths to ship these objects to her, received a letter from customs regarding their reshipment. Leonor Fini emphasizes the need to act quickly, expressly requesting that the vases be retrieved and shipped without being unpacked: “We must act quickly [...] He must have them picked up as soon as possible and shipped as is, without unpacking them here. ” She also notes that her mother has been unable to reach Sonia, her employee, who is suffering from a problem with her vocal cords. The letter concludes with a forceful directive, characteristic of her temperament: “Call Sonia at the Lenars’ house—be passionate and forceful.” This correspondence offers a vivid glimpse into Leonor Fini’s daily life, her interest in decorative objects, and the importance she placed on the design of her living spaces. The Sicilian vases she is trying to acquire illustrate her taste for unique objects and theatrical atmospheres, which were so prominent in her artistic world. Léonor Fini regularly stayed in Nonza, Corsica, with her close friends, notably Stanislao Lepri and Constantin Jelenski. This place held an important place in her personal and creative life. Condition: Generally good condition. Age-related creases, some wrinkles, and slight signs of handling. Red ink well preserved. Envelope has significant tears at the opening but retains its stamp and postmark.
