DUKAS (Paul) (1865–1935), French composer and educator, auth - Lot 149
DUKAS (Paul) (1865–1935), French composer and educator, author of *The Sorcerer’s Apprentice* and the opera *Ariane and Bluebeard*, professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory. Autograph letter signed “Paul Dukas” to a correspondent. Paris, November 7, 1928. 1 page, folio. An interesting letter in which Paul Dukas discusses his professional obligations and his recent appointment at the Conservatory, which prevents him from accepting a proposal. “I am deeply touched by the words in your letter and very honored by your proposal. Unfortunately, it is not possible for me to accept your kind invitation, for not only am I as poor a public speaker as one could be—and have I never in my life given a lecture—but my classes at the Paris Conservatory and the École Normale de Musique would not allow me the time in January to travel to Brussels. ” He explains that he cannot free himself from his teaching commitments and concludes by expressing his gratitude for the invitation. Paul Dukas taught at the École Normale de Musique in Paris and at the Conservatory, where he was appointed professor of composition in 1928. His students included, notably, Olivier Messiaen and Maurice Duruflé. This letter provides an interesting insight into the composer’s teaching activities toward the end of his career and his reluctance to speak in public. The paper shows some old creases, slight marks, and a small marginal tear visible in the photograph.
