DUBOIS (Théodore). Signed autograph letter to Maurice Emmanu - Lot 143
DUBOIS (Théodore). Signed autograph letter to Maurice Emmanuel. November 8, 1917. DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer and organist, director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. No place, November 8, 1917. 1 page, oblong in-12 format. An interesting letter addressed to his former student Maurice Emmanuel, in which Théodore Dubois thanks his correspondent for his interest in a speech he is sending him. “You were kind enough, my dear friend, to ask for my little speech. Here it is. You do it great honor…” Maurice Emmanuel, a composer and musicologist, had studied at the Paris Conservatory, notably under Théodore Dubois. He also served as choirmaster at the Church of Sainte-Clotilde and as a professor of music history at the Conservatory. This correspondence bears witness to the relationship between the two musicians, set against the backdrop of French musical life during World War I.
