DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 141
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; winner of the Prix de Rome in 1861; later director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to a friend [Maurice Emmanuel, according to the original catalog entry]. Rosnay (Marne), July 5, 1884. 1 1/3 pages, in-12 format, on mourning paper. In this letter, Théodore Dubois reassures his correspondent and speaks with regret of his departure from Paris. “Your former classmates have indeed done well, and I am happy for them. I saw Delibes, who deeply regrets that you were forced to leave Paris; he seems to have a great deal of sympathy for you. ” The composer is referring here to Léo Delibes (1836–1891), composer of works such as *Lakmé* and *Coppélia*, and professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory. This letter attests to the attention Dubois paid to his students as well as the relationships between the Conservatory’s professors and the young composers. Mourning stationery with a wide black border; shows signs of age.
