DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; winner of the Prix de Rome in 1861; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. Paris, May 20, 1906. 2 pages, in-12 format, on letterhead bearing his address, 201 Boulevard Pereire. A friendly letter in which Théodore Dubois mentions a meeting with Maurice Emmanuel and the latter’s election to the Société des Concerts. “Thank you for your very kind note. You may find me at home on Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. if you wish to see me. We are leaving for the countryside on the 28th, so it is unlikely that I will be able to visit you at your home. ” The composer adds: “Anticipating his friend’s likely election to the Société des concerts, he explains: ‘For personal reasons that I cannot disclose here, I am unable to attend the meeting, and I regret this because of the vote concerning you.’ ” This letter attests to the friendly and professional relationship between Théodore Dubois and his former student Maurice Emmanuel, as well as to the institutional life of Parisian musical societies in the early 20th century. Minor signs of wear.
