DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 135
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. No place, November 7, 1923. 2 pages, oblong in-12 format, on mourning paper with a wide black border. A moving letter of comfort addressed to Maurice Emmanuel, in which Théodore Dubois discusses his personal and financial difficulties. “Dear friend, I cannot tell you enough how touched I am by your affectionate words during these days when memories become even more precious and sadder.” The composer warmly thanks his correspondent for his support: “Indeed, you have overexerted yourself with such a strenuous effort—so often more for others than for yourself! ” He goes on to express his concern about his friend’s situation: “I am often deeply saddened that you are not in the position you deserve!” This letter, written a few months before Théodore Dubois’s death, bears witness to the deep bonds of friendship that united the two composers, as well as the difficulties Maurice Emmanuel faced in obtaining the recognition and standing to which his talent was entitled. Mourning stationery with a wide black border. Some minor signs of age and handling.
