DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 131
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. Paris, November 23, 1912. 1 page, in-12 format, on letterhead bearing his address, 201 Boulevard Pereire. An interesting letter in which Théodore Dubois speaks with irritation about the actions of a third party whose name he prefers not to mention. “I’ve just returned from Germany, where I was treated like a celebrity (what a change from my compatriots!), and I found your note. — What they’re about to do is not only stupid, but harmful. F… is gathering rods to have himself whipped! I didn’t think he was that s...! But what can one do?” Dubois, returning from a trip to Germany where he had received a particularly warm welcome, reveals his bitterness toward certain circles in the French music world. He expresses his disagreement with a decision whose nature is not specified, while maintaining a certain discretion regarding the individuals involved. This letter attests to the composer’s sometimes critical attitude toward his contemporaries and to the tensions that could run through the French music world in the early 20th century. Autograph address on the reverse to Maurice Emmanuel, 42 Rue de Grenelle, Paris. Two 5-centime stamps still attached, postmarks. A few minor irregularities in the margins.
