DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 127
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. No place, January 29, 1902. 2 pages, in-16 format. A charming invitation to a dinner gathering several prominent figures from Parisian artistic and intellectual circles. “It would be most kind of you if you would do Madame Th. Dubois and me, to come to our home for dinner on Wednesday, February 12, at 7:30 p.m., along with a few male friends, including Roujon, Larroumet, Rety, Marmontel, etc.—no formalities and no need to dress up.” Théodore Dubois thus invited his former student Maurice Emmanuel to a friendly gathering that was to include, among others, Joseph-Henry Roujon (1853–1914), a high-ranking civil servant and member of the Academy of Fine Arts, Gustave Larroumet (1852–1903), art historian and former permanent secretary of the Academy of Fine Arts; and Antoine-François Marmontel (1816–1898), pianist and professor at the Conservatory. This correspondence attests to the social connections Théodore Dubois maintained with the leading figures of Parisian cultural life at the turn of the 20th century. Some slight signs of wear.
