DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 123
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. Barbizon, Hôtel de la Forêt, April 16, 1908. 2 pages, oblong in-16 format, on letterhead bearing his Paris address, 201 Boulevard Pereire. Letter of condolence addressed to Maurice Emmanuel following the death of his father-in-law. “It is here, where Madame Dubois and I have come to rest a little, that I have received from Madame Dutertre the very sad news of the death of my poor …, who had remained so faithfully devoted to me and whom I was particularly fond of. ” The composer goes on to express his sympathy to the bereaved family and asks Maurice Emmanuel to convey his condolences to Madame Dutertre. This letter attests to the bonds of affection that united Théodore Dubois with the family of his former student, beyond their musical and professional ties. The card shows some old traces of tape, particularly along the top and right edges, with small, superficial tears in the paper.
