DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 121
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to a friend. Paris, January 29, 1914. 1 page, oblong in-12 format, on letterhead bearing his address, 201 Boulevard Pereire. A friendly letter in which Théodore Dubois, then 76 years old, expresses his regret at not having been able to receive his correspondent and sends him his best wishes for a speedy recovery. “Mrs. Dubois tells me that you got up, even though you were already unwell, to come see me on January 1, and that you have been ill ever since. I am sorry to think that I may have unwittingly been the cause of this, and I want to tell you how much I hope to see you back on your feet very soon. ” This correspondence attests to the composer’s affection for the recipient and his personal consideration, which went beyond the musical and professional relationships he maintained with those close to him. Théodore Dubois served as choirmaster at Sainte-Clotilde Church, then at the Church of La Madeleine, where he succeeded Camille Saint-Saëns at the main organ. He directed the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. The card shows some slight signs of handling.
