DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 120
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. No place, May 5, 1915. 1 page, in-12 format, on blue-gray paper. A friendly letter in which Théodore Dubois thanks his correspondent for his explanations and mentions a question he wishes to explore further during a future meeting. “I don’t believe I’ve thanked you yet for your kind and informative letter. We’ll return to this when I have the pleasure of seeing you. The matter is well worth discussing.” The composer goes on to convey his wife’s thanks: “Mrs. Dubois also thanks you for sending your donation for the poor people of Reims, and sends her warmest regards to everyone. ” This correspondence, written during World War I, attests to the friendly relationship between Théodore Dubois and his former student Maurice Emmanuel, as well as their solidarity with the residents of Reims, who were particularly hard-hit by German bombardments. Autograph address on the reverse to Maurice Emmanuel, 42 Rue de Grenelle, Paris VII. Stamp intact and Paris postmark dated May 6, 1915. Some normal creases and minor irregularities in the margins.
