DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 119
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to a friend [Maurice Emmanuel]. No place, February 11, 1917. 1 page, in-8. In this letter, Théodore Dubois asks his correspondent for help with a personal matter, appealing to his kindness. “The other day, you so kindly offered your assistance in case you could be of any service to me that I have no hesitation in appealing to your goodwill for a matter I cannot handle myself, since I am not yet going out. ” He then suggests a meeting to explain his request: “If you would be so kind as to come see me, I will explain this to you in person. ” This letter attests to the friendly relationship between Théodore Dubois and his correspondent, likely Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), a composer and musicologist who was his student at the Paris Conservatory. It also reveals that Dubois was temporarily unable to go out, though the reason is not specified. Théodore Dubois served as choirmaster at the Church of Sainte-Clotilde and later at the Madeleine, where he succeeded Camille Saint-Saëns at the main organ.
