DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, an - Lot 115
DUBOIS (Théodore) (1837–1924), French composer, organist, and educator; director of the Paris Conservatory from 1896 to 1905. Autograph letter signed “Th. Dubois” to Maurice Emmanuel (1862–1938), French composer and musicologist. Paris, December 7, 1909. 1 page, in-12 format, on letterhead bearing his address, 201 Boulevard Pereire. A short, friendly letter in which Théodore Dubois offers advice to his former student Maurice Emmanuel regarding sending a card to his professors. “I’m writing to Paladilhe—I’ll be there! A little advice: — If you haven’t already done so, send your card to all the professors.” The composer is referring here to Émile Paladilhe (1844–1926), winner of the Prix de Rome in 1860 and a member of the Academy of Fine Arts. This letter attests to the ongoing relationship between Théodore Dubois and Maurice Emmanuel, as well as the customs and procedures to which musicians were subject in Parisian academic circles in the early 20th century. Paper with a transverse fold.
