DELANNOY (Marcel) (1898–1962) - Lot 96
DELANNOY (Marcel) (1898–1962) French composer, author of numerous operas, symphonies, and film scores. Autograph letter signed “Marcel Delannoy,” addressed to a correspondent in the music world. No place or date [Saint-Germain-en-Laye]. 1 p. in-4, on letterhead printed “14, place du Château, Saint-Germain-en-Laye.” An interesting letter concerning the performance of his incidental music for *Le Marchand de lunettes*. The composer explains to his correspondent that, in addition to the incidental music, there is an orchestral suite bearing the same title: “You may well be unaware that, alongside the incidental music, there was an orchestral suite derived from it and bearing the same name.” He notes that this suite was sent to his publisher and that the orchestral score is no longer in his possession. Referring to the difficulties he encountered in obtaining a copy, he concludes with a touch of humor: “I can’t hold it against you for having been wary of the adventure of improvisation, and I hope that Radio-Lille will soon give me a chance to redeem myself! ” An interesting account of the broadcast and performance conditions of musical works in the 20th century, particularly on the radio. Some older creases; a few slight signs of handling.
