DEBUSSY (Claude). (1862–1918). French composer, a leading fi - Lot 94
DEBUSSY (Claude). (1862–1918). French composer, a leading figure in modern music. Set of four photographic reproductions of autograph musical manuscripts by Claude Debussy, including one page bearing an autograph dedication to Alfred Cortot. [No place, Lausanne, photographer De Jongh, undated]. 4 black-and-white photographic prints, approximately in-4 size, mounted or printed on photographic paper with white margins. Stamp on the reverse reading “DE JONGH PHOTOGRAPHE LAUSANNE,” accompanied by the handwritten references “92/70-2,” “92/70-3,” and “92/70-4” on three of the prints. An interesting documentary collection reproducing several pages of Claude Debussy’s handwritten sheet music, richly annotated and corrected. The photographs reproduce pages of music featuring numerous performance instructions, dynamics, slurs, corrections, and handwritten annotations. One of the pages features, at the top, a dedication to Alfred Cortot, accompanied by an inscription by Claude Debussy dated October 1899. Another reproduction shows a musical passage preceded by a few handwritten lines, while the others illustrate the process of composition and musical notation. These documents offer an interesting insight into the transmission and study of Debussy’s manuscripts, particularly within musicological circles and among collectors of autograph scores. Historical photographs of manuscripts; these are not original autograph manuscripts. Prints showing some signs of handling and slight visible alterations. Appears to be in good overall condition.
