DAVID D'ANGERS (Pierre-Jean David, known as) (1788–1856). - Lot 93
DAVID D'ANGERS (Pierre-Jean David, known as) (1788–1856). Famous French sculptor and medalist. Winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1811, creator of the Pantheon’s pediment and numerous sculpted portraits of the great figures of his time. Autograph letter signed “David d’Angers” to a gentleman. No place, no date. 1 page, in-8 format, with a significant autograph note in the margin. An interesting letter concerning contemporary artists and the recognition of the great masters of French sculpture. David d’Angers discusses the proofs that were sent to him as well as the artists whose names were suggested, particularly those mentioned by Mr. Monteil. “As you requested, I have just received the proofs you sent me; all the artists whose names I added were contemporaries of those mentioned by Mr. Monteil [...]” He adds that it would be unfair to exclude from this list certain artists who have brought honor to the fine arts in France. This letter is of particular interest for art history and the compilation of biographical lists dedicated to French sculptors. In it, David d’Angers expresses his desire to preserve the memory of his colleagues, as well as his assessment of the place they deserve in art history.
