D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 88
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d’Indy,” addressed to Narcisse Brument, conductor and librettist. Brussels, February 13, 1896. 1 p. in-8, in black ink, on letterhead illustrated from the magazine *L'Art moderne*, 32 Rue de l'Industrie, Brussels. An interesting letter concerning the organization of a concert in Rouen and the performance of a symphonic work by Vincent d’Indy. The composer informs his correspondent that the necessary arrangements have been made with the Dutch musicians for his participation in the May 23 concert in Rouen: “You can count on me for your concert on May 23 in Rouen; everything has been arranged with the Dutch musicians. My only other date there is June 3.” He specifies that he has chosen the work he wishes to have performed on this occasion: “I met with Litta, the pianist who will perform my ‘Symphony for Orchestra and Piano on a French Mountain Tune.’” He announces that the pianist will cover his own travel expenses as well as those of Louis Steinway and hopes that the performance will satisfy his correspondent. A beautiful letter directly referencing the “Symphony on a French Mountain Tune,” Op. 25, known as the “Cévenole Symphony,” one of Vincent d’Indy’s major works, composed in 1886 and which has become an important piece in the French concert repertoire. The letter also attests to his relationships with European musicians and his involvement in the musical life of Rouen in the late 19th century. Some old creases, a few small marginal perforations, and slight signs of handling. Beautiful illustrated letterhead from the magazine *L'Art moderne*.
