D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 84
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “V. d'Indy,” addressed to a correspondent. No place or date [Thursday evening]. 2 pp. in-16, in black ink, on a double sheet. An interesting letter regarding a literary request and the preparation of a symphony intended for the Concerts Lamoureux. Vincent d’Indy thanks his correspondent for the interest shown in his work and promises him an unpublished piece for the magazine *La Vogue*, while explaining that his musical obligations prevent him from responding immediately: “Your request gives me the greatest pleasure, and I promise you an unpublished piece of some sort for *La Vogue*, which I follow with the greatest interest; however, it cannot be ready before the end of January, as I am completely absorbed in a symphony with piano accompaniment that I am preparing for Lamoureux. ” He confides that he is working intensely on this piece, day and night, in order to finish it by the deadline. He also mentions César Franck, from whom he is awaiting a reply, and promises to forward it to his correspondent as soon as he receives it. An interesting account of Vincent d’Indy’s creative activity, his relationships with César Franck and Charles Lamoureux, as well as his connections to the literary circles of the late 19th century. Some old creases; slight signs of handling.
