D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 82
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d’Indy,” addressed to a correspondent. Paris, March 9, 1903. 2 pp., oblong in-12 format, in black ink, on letterhead printed “7, avenue de Villars.” An interesting letter in which Vincent d’Indy thanks his correspondent for sending a book and reflects on the difficulties of music criticism and the recognition of artists. The composer expresses his gratitude for the book and the kind words that accompanied it: “I do not know how to thank you for your valuable book and the very kind words that accompany it.” He then explains that his many obligations prevented him from reading the book sooner, before discussing the difficulties faced by musicians and critics: “I do not believe that the Latin thesis puts me off; on the contrary, it seemed to me […] the necessary complement to the work.” In particular, he emphasizes the importance of music criticism grounded in a genuine knowledge of the works and in rigorous artistic reflection. An interesting insight into Vincent d’Indy’s aesthetic and intellectual convictions, as well as his relationships with music critics in the early 20th century. Some old creases and slight signs of handling.
