D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 80
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d’Indy,” addressed to Narcisse Brument, conductor and librettist. No place, June 4, 1895. 2 pp. in-12, in black ink, on a double sheet. An interesting letter in which Vincent d’Indy discusses his travels, his professional obligations, and his plans to stay in Rouen. The composer thanks his correspondent for the invitation but explains that he is unable to commit to a specific date due to his frequent travels: “You are extremely kind to think of me for Rouen, but I truly do not believe it is possible for me to make a firm commitment so far in advance. ” He adds that he does not yet know whether he will be able to stay in Paris during the coming year but is nevertheless considering a trip to Rouen in August: “I don’t know if I’ll be spending next year in Paris, and in any case, in August, I’ll be so far from Rouen that I couldn’t possibly consider traveling across all of France for a single concert. ” He adds, however, that if circumstances permit, he would gladly accept his correspondent’s invitation: “During the winter, if you need me and I’m in Paris, it will always be my pleasure, but from late June to late November, don’t count on me. ” An interesting account of the many requests received by Vincent d’Indy and the organization of his musical career at the end of the 19th century. Some old creases, small marginal perforations, and slight signs of handling.
