D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 79
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d'Indy,” addressed to a friend. No place, March 25, 1929. 1 p. in-8, in black ink. A lovely thank-you letter regarding a performance of his opera *L'Étranger* and the performance of his work *La Légende de Saint Christophe*. Vincent d'Indy expresses his gratitude to his correspondent for her efforts on behalf of his opera *L'Étranger*, composed in two acts and premiered in Brussels in 1903. He is particularly touched by the artistic commitment and friendship she has shown: “Thank you, and thank you again, for the work you put into my *Étranger*. Thanks to you—I know this—everything that was sung in the work was absolutely spot-on, and I want to tell you how deeply moved I was by the warm friendship you have shown me. ” He then refers to a performance of *La Légende de Saint Christophe*, a sacred drama in three acts and eight scenes, a major work of his mature period: “That same performance of *Saint Christophe* remains very vivid in my heart, and what you did for *L’Étranger* could only serve to deepen that feeling even further. ” He concludes by reiterating his thanks and affection. A touching account of Vincent d’Indy’s final years, his devotion to his operas, and the gratitude he felt toward their performers. An old horizontal crease; slight signs of handling. A beautiful signature, heavily underlined.
