D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 77
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, a student of César Franck and co-founder of the Schola Cantorum in Paris. Autograph letter signed “Vincent d’Indy,” addressed to a friend. Paris, April 22, 1915. 2 pp. in-12, in black ink, on a double sheet. A printed portrait of the composer is pasted onto the last page. An interesting letter concerning the organization of his musical activities and his numerous commitments as a composer and teacher during World War I. Vincent d’Indy attempts to arrange a meeting with his correspondent but explains the difficulties posed by his particularly busy schedule: “I had sent you my available times; unfortunately, on Mondays, I am always busy all day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. ” He suggests several possible dates for a meeting, notably Thursday, April 29, or Friday, April 30, before mentioning his rehearsals and teaching commitments: “After that, I’ll have rehearsals for four concerts, in addition to my class at the School, and won’t have a moment to spare until May 20.” An interesting account of Vincent d’Indy’s particularly hectic schedule during World War I, juggling his teaching duties at the Schola Cantorum with his involvement in Parisian musical life. Several old creases, slight signs of handling. Pasted-in printed portrait.
