D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) - Lot 76
D'INDY (Vincent) (1851–1931) French composer and educator, co-founder of the Schola Cantorum. Autographed postcard signed “V. I.,” addressed to Maurice Alquier. Les Faugs, Boffres (Ardèche), July 17, 1914. 1 p., oblong in-12 format, in black ink, on an illustrated postcard depicting the Château des Faugs, the composer’s family estate. Recipient’s address in La Rochelle, 10-centime stamp, and postmark. A charming letter in which Vincent d’Indy thanks his student Maurice Alquier and humorously discusses his orchestration work. He is delighted by the news he has received from his correspondent and highlights his musical activities: “Are you working? I am, and since it’s 5 o’clock (in the morning! you’re surely still fast asleep), I’ll have to get back to my bassoons and my flugelhorns (because I do have flugelhorns!).” He regrets not being able to send him a more detailed letter right away and promises to write to him soon. An interesting insight into Vincent d’Indy’s work habits; he would compose and orchestrate from the early hours of the morning at his home in Les Faugs, Ardèche. Small tear along the left edge; slight signs of handling.
