CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, conductor - Lot 67
CORTOT (Alfred) (1877–1962). Franco-Swiss pianist, conductor, and educator. One of the most illustrious pianists of the first half of the 20th century and founder of the École normale de musique de Paris. Typewritten letter signed “Alfred Cortot,” addressed to the Portuguese composer Francisco de Lacerda (1869–1934). Paris, June 20, 1932. 2 pages, in-8 format, on personal letterhead “alf. Cortot - 79, avenue Henri-Martin,” typed on both sides of a single sheet. Autograph signature in black ink. A very interesting letter concerning the performance in France of Francisco de Lacerda’s *Trovas*, reflecting Alfred Cortot’s efforts to introduce Portuguese music to the Parisian public. The famous pianist expresses his deep disappointment at the postponement of a concert at the École normale de musique during which his correspondent’s remarkable *Trovas* were to be performed. “We are truly having a run of bad luck with your remarkable *Trovas*!” He explains that the singer Madeleine Grey had prepared these works with the utmost care, rehearsing in particular in the presence of their friend Branco, who had been particularly impressed by the quality of her performance and her Portuguese accent. Although the orchestra had been assembled, the materials prepared, and the programs already sent to subscribers, a recording engagement offered to many of his musicians forced Cortot to postpone the event until early October. The pianist makes no secret of his bitterness: “This is a great regret for me, for everything was ready, the material had been revised, and I was looking forward to the success that the unveiling of your poems—so distinctive and so deeply musical—was bound to achieve. ” He nevertheless reaffirms his confidence in Lacerda’s work and in the talent of Madeleine Grey, whose interpretive qualities he highlights: “I can assure you, in any case, that you will not regret my choice of Madeleine Grey to premiere these pieces in October; she will be outstanding.” Finally, Cortot mentions a young musician, Mademoiselle Santos, recommended by his correspondent, who wishes to meet him. He promises to inquire at the École normale and to share his impressions after hearing her play. This correspondence offers valuable insight into Alfred Cortot’s role in promoting European music and into Franco-Portuguese artistic exchanges during the interwar period. This correspondence also illustrates his personal commitment to organizing concerts, selecting performers, and introducing repertoires that were still relatively unknown in France. Francisco de Lacerda, a Portuguese composer and conductor, was a key figure in musical exchanges between France and Portugal. His *Trovas*, inspired by the Portuguese folk tradition, hold a special place in his vocal works. A beautiful letter on personal stationery, with a clearly legible autograph signature. Old creases, slight wrinkles, a few marks, and minor marginal alterations. In good overall condition.
